Church of St. John the Evangelist

The Church of San Giovanni Evangelista in Turin, located on Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, is a magnificent example of nineteenth-century religious architecture. Built on the initiative of Don Giovanni Bosco, the church was designed by the architect Edoardo Arborio Mella and completed in 1878. This project represents one of the numerous works promoted by Don Bosco to provide young people with a place of worship and education. The architecture of the church is characterized by a neo-Gothic style, evident in the imposing facade and numerous interior decorations. The facade features a large central portal, flanked by two side portals, all surmounted by pointed arches. Above the main portal is a large rose window that illuminates the interior of the church, while the spires and pinnacles complete the typical ascensional effect of Gothic architecture. The interior of the church is laid out in a Latin cross plan, with a central nave and two side aisles. The aisles are decorated with frescoes by Enrico Reffo, executed between 1881 and 1882, depicting scenes from the life of Saint John the Evangelist and other sacred figures. These paintings are an excellent example of religious art of the period, with a particular attention to detail and a skillful use of light and color to create a spiritual atmosphere. The main altar is one of the focal points of the church, with a painting depicting Saint John the Evangelist. The side chapels house other sacred works of art, including statues and paintings dedicated to various saints and the Virgin Mary. The combination of these works creates an atmosphere of great devotion and aesthetic beauty. The construction of the church is closely linked to the figure of Don Giovanni Bosco, founder of the Salesian Congregation, who played a fundamental role in the development of education and care for young people in Turin and around the world. Don Bosco wanted to create a place where young people could receive not only religious instruction, but also a comprehensive education that would prepare them for adult life. In addition to its religious function, the Church of San Giovanni Evangelista has played an important role in the social and cultural life of the neighborhood. During the 20th century, the church became a point of reference for the local community, hosting numerous activities and events, including concerts, conferences, and cultural gatherings. An interesting anecdote related to the church is the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1980, during his pastoral trip to Turin. On that occasion, the Pope wanted to pay tribute to Don Bosco and his work, emphasizing the importance of education and care for young people in the mission of the Church. In recent decades, the church has undergone various restoration interventions to preserve its beauty and structural integrity. These works have included the restoration of the frescoes, roof repairs, and the consolidation of load-bearing structures.
