Margaret Island

Margaret Island (Margitsziget), located in the middle of the Danube in Budapest, is one of the natural and cultural gems of the Hungarian capital. This urban park, stretching for about 2.5 kilometers, offers a green and peaceful refuge from the hustle and bustle of the city, and is a place rich in history, art, and recreational activities. Margaret lived and died on the island, and her convent became an important pilgrimage site. Margaret Island has undergone numerous transformations over the centuries. During the Ottoman period, many of its religious buildings were destroyed. It was only in the 19th century that the island began to develop as a public park, thanks to the efforts of Palatine József, who transformed it into a landscaped garden. The park quickly became a place of leisure and relaxation for the aristocracy of Budapest. Today, Margaret Island is a popular urban park that offers a wide range of attractions and activities for visitors of all ages. Among its most notable features are the numerous well-kept gardens, such as the Rose Garden and the Japanese Garden, which offer a splendid variety of flowers and plants. The Rose Garden, in particular, is famous for its collection of over 2000 roses of different varieties. One of the island’s most iconic symbols is the Water Tower, built in 1911 in Art Nouveau style. This tower, 57 meters high, offers a spectacular panoramic view of Budapest and the Danube. The Water Tower has been restored and now hosts exhibitions and cultural events, making it a cultural landmark as well as an architectural one. Margaret Island is also a place of historical importance due to its medieval remains, including the ruins of the convent of Saint Margaret and the Franciscan church.
