The Plage du Prophète is one of the most iconic and popular beaches in Marseille, located in the 7th arrondissement along the famous Corniche du Président-John-Fitzgerald-Kennedy. This beach is renowned for its fine sand and shallow waters, making it particularly suitable for families and less experienced swimmers. The history of the Plage du Prophète dates back to the 19th century, and one of the most fascinating theories about the origin of its name is linked to the famous baritone Jean-Vital Jammes, known as Ismaël. Ismaël, famous for his performances in Giacomo Meyerbeer’s opera “Le Prophète,” purchased a villa in the nearby neighborhood of Roucas-Blanc, overlooking the Corniche. Legend has it that the singer often practiced his arias overlooking the sea, making the name “Plage du Prophète” a tribute to his presence and art. Over the years, the beach has become a very popular meeting place for the people of Marseille, thanks to its central location and easy access. During the summer, the Plage du Prophète is supervised by lifeguards, ensuring the safety of swimmers. It is equipped with numerous amenities including showers, public toilets, a bar, and children’s play areas, creating a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere for visitors of all ages. The Plage du Prophète is also known for its sports activities, particularly beach volleyball. The beach has a beach volleyball court that attracts enthusiasts of this sport from across the city, making it a reference point for outdoor physical activity. Additionally, the beach often hosts events and tournaments, creating a lively and dynamic environment. During the 20th century, the beach became a gathering place for families and young people, who come here for picnics, sand games, and swims. Summer evenings are animated by traditional “apéro-picnics,” socializing moments where friends and families gather to share food and drinks until late at night. However, in recent years, these activities have been regulated to reduce disturbance to nearby residents, balancing tradition with the need for nighttime tranquility. Another notable attraction of the Plage du Prophète is the Marseille Underwater Museum, located a short distance from the shore. This unique museum, inaugurated in 2020, features a series of sculptures installed on the seabed, creating an underwater route that can be explored through snorkeling or diving. This innovative project not only enriches the cultural offer of the beach but also promotes environmental awareness and sea conservation. Easily accessible by public transport, the beach is well served by bus line 83, connecting the Vieux-Port to the Rond-point du Prado. For those who prefer to arrive by car, paid parking is available nearby, although during the summer season it is advisable to arrive early to find a spot.
