Trsteno Arboretum

The Trsteno Arboretum, located about 20 kilometers northwest of Dubrovnik, is the oldest arboretum in Croatia and one of the country’s most precious botanical gems. Founded in 1492 by the noble Gučetić-Gozze family, the arboretum covers an area of about 28 hectares and houses an extraordinary collection of exotic and native plants, along with a rich historical and artistic heritage. The history of the Trsteno Arboretum begins in the late 15th century, when the influential and wealthy Gučetić-Gozze family decided to create an exotic garden around their summer villa. Thanks to their frequent travels and commercial connections with the Mediterranean and the rest of the world, they managed to introduce a wide range of exotic plants, transforming their garden into a biodiversity oasis. One of the most fascinating elements of the arboretum is the historic aqueduct, built in the 16th century to supply water to the gardens. This irrigation system, about 70 meters long, is fed by a spring located in the village of Trsteno and represents an extraordinary example of hydraulic engineering of the time. The water flows through a stone arch bridge that adds a picturesque touch to the landscape. The arboretum is known for its monumental oriental plane trees, planted over 500 years ago and considered among the oldest and most imposing trees in Europe. These green giants, with trunks exceeding five meters in diameter, provide shade and coolness during the hot summer months, creating a suggestive and relaxing environment for visitors. The Renaissance garden is another central point of interest. Designed according to the principles of Italian Renaissance, the garden is divided into geometric parterres, enriched with statues, fountains, and ornamental basins. One of the most notable fountains is the Fountain of Neptune, adorned with mythological statues representing Neptune, the god of the sea, surrounded by nymphs and tritons. This space reflects the aesthetic taste and attention to detail of its creators, offering a fascinating glimpse into the life and culture of noble families of the time. In addition to the Renaissance garden, the arboretum also includes a Baroque garden, created in the 18th century. This garden is characterized by a greater emphasis on theatricality and drama, with winding paths, flower beds, and water features. The Baroque atmosphere invites visitors to get lost in the greenery and discover hidden corners and picturesque views. The Trsteno Arboretum suffered serious damage during the Croatian War of Independence in the 1990s, when it was hit by bombings and fires. However, thanks to restoration and conservation efforts, the arboretum has been restored to its former glory. Today, it is managed by the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts and continues to be an important center for botanical research and conservation. In addition to its historical and botanical significance, the arboretum has been used as a filming location for the popular TV series “Game of Thrones.” The beauty and unique atmosphere of the gardens have provided the backdrop for several scenes in the series, further increasing the international fame of this extraordinary place.
