Church of San Pietro Barisano

The Church of San Pietro Barisano, located in the heart of the Sasso Barisano in Matera, is one of the most fascinating testimonies of rock architecture and the religious history of the city. This church, carved into the typical limestone rock of the region, represents a perfect combination of nature and human ingenuity, reflecting centuries of devotion and sacred art. The church, dedicated to San Pietro, dates back to the 12th century, although some sources suggest it may have even older origins. The name “Barisano” could derive from the fact that the church was used by the faithful coming from the city of Bari, or simply to differentiate it from other churches dedicated to San Pietro. Its strategic position in the Sasso Barisano made it easily accessible and visible, becoming a spiritual reference point for the community. The main entrance of the church, overlooking a small square, is simple yet majestic, characterized by a portal decorated with sculptural elements reflecting Romanesque art. Above the portal, a small window allows light to penetrate inside, creating a mystical and suggestive atmosphere. The external architecture, although discreet, integrates perfectly with the surrounding rocky landscape, almost as if the church naturally emerged from the stone. Inside, the church has a single nave plan with a series of side chapels, all carved into the rock. The barrel vault and walls are richly decorated with frescoes and stuccoes from different eras, testifying to the continuous modifications and expansions undergone by the structure over the centuries. The frescoes, in particular, are an extraordinary example of medieval and Renaissance sacred art, with scenes from the life of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and various saints, including San Pietro. The main altar, located in the deepest part of the church, is carved directly into the rock and decorated with golden stuccoes and frescoes. Above the altar, a large crucifix dominates the scene, symbolizing the Christian faith and the devotion of the community. The side chapels, dedicated to different saints, house minor altars and statues of remarkable artistic value, creating a spiritual path that invites meditation and prayer. A particularly interesting element in the Church of San Pietro Barisano is the crypt, accessible through a staircase carved into the rock. This crypt, used as a burial place for members of the community, contains numerous loculi and funerary frescoes, offering a valuable testimony of medieval funerary practices. During restoration works in the 20th century, numerous archaeological finds were discovered, including human bones and fragments of pottery, which have allowed to reconstruct the history of the site and better understand the religious and daily life of the communities that gravitated around it.
