Britzer Garden

Britzer Garten, located in the Neukölln district of Berlin, is an extraordinary park that combines natural beauty, landscape architecture, and a rich program of cultural and recreational activities. Inaugurated in 1985 on the occasion of the Bundesgartenschau (Federal Garden Show), the park was created to provide the inhabitants of the southeastern part of West Berlin with a new green space, especially at a time when they were isolated from the surrounding countryside due to the Berlin Wall. Covering an area of 90 hectares, Britzer Garten offers a wide range of experiences for visitors. At the center of the park is a lake of about ten hectares, surrounded by hills, meadows, and groves. The lake is divided into different sections, including the Irissee, the Baltiksee, and the Südsee, which together create a diverse and fascinating aquatic landscape. A circular path winds around the lake, allowing visitors to explore the area, while bridges and walkways offer shorter routes and picturesque views.One of the most distinctive features of the park is its variety of themed gardens. Among these stands out the Rosengarten, a magnificent rose garden, and the Rhododendrongarten, a rhododendron grove. In spring, the park transforms into a riot of colors thanks to the blooming tulips, celebrated with the event “Tulipan.” In summer, the dahlia beds, known as “Dahlienfeuer,” attract numerous visitors with their spectacular blooms. There is also a witch’s garden, which transports visitors to the past, showcasing the medicinal and aromatic plants used in the Middle Ages.Britzer Garten is not only a paradise for plant lovers but also offers multiple attractions for families and children. The park features a large playground, a water park where children can have fun during the summer months, and an enclosure with animals such as sheep, goats, rabbits, and donkeys. Additionally, the park boasts a miniature railway, the Britzer Museumsbahn, which travels a five-kilometer circuit, offering visitors a relaxing and scenic way to explore the park.From an architectural point of view, Britzer Garten features several interesting works. The restaurant “Café am See,” built in 1985 by architect Engelbert Kremser, uses rammed earth technology that blends seamlessly with the surrounding environment. Another attraction is Europe’s largest sundial, with a diameter of 99 meters, located near the Kalenderplatz restaurant.One cannot talk about Britzer Garten without mentioning the Britzer Mühle, one of the few remaining functioning windmills in Berlin. Built in 1865, this historic structure has been restored and offers guided tours during the mill season, from April to October. Visitors can observe the grain milling process and purchase fresh bread and flour produced on-site. Adjacent to the mill is the Müllerhaus, a restaurant serving regional and seasonal dishes, and a large beer garden to relax in during the summer days. The nearest bus stop is located at the main entrance on Buckower Damm, and the park is equipped with accessible paths and facilities for people with disabilities.
