The ABC Museum, located in the heart of Madrid, is one of the most important cultural centers dedicated to drawing and illustration in Spain. Housed in a historic building that was once a brewery, the museum is a perfect example of how tradition and modernity can coexist harmoniously, offering a dynamic and innovative space for artistic creativity.
The history of the ABC Museum is closely linked to the prestigious Spanish newspaper ABC, founded in 1891. The museum’s collection originates from the newspaper’s historical archive, which includes over 200,000 works by more than 1,500 artists. These works range from drawing to illustration, from satirical cartoons to advertising graphics, documenting over a century of artistic and cultural evolution.
The building that houses the museum, designed by architect José López Sallaberry, was originally built in 1891 as the Mahou brewery. The conversion into a museum, which took place in 2010, has preserved many of the original architectural features, such as cast iron columns and wooden beams, creating an environment that blends industrial history with contemporary design. The renovation project, carried out by architects Aranguren & Gallegos, has enhanced the open spaces and natural light, making the museum a welcoming and stimulating place for visitors.
The ABC Museum is divided into different exhibition rooms that host temporary and permanent exhibitions. The permanent collection offers a journey through the evolution of drawing and illustration in Spain, with works ranging from the early 20th century to the present day. Among the represented artists are names like Antonio Mingote, Antonio de Pereda, and Ricardo Baroja, whose works reflect the artistic and social trends of their time.
Temporary exhibitions, on the other hand, are characterized by a wide variety of themes and styles, offering an overview of the most innovative trends in contemporary illustration. These exhibitions often include works by emerging artists, promoting creativity and innovation in the Spanish and international artistic landscape. Additionally, the museum regularly organizes events, workshops, and conferences involving artists, critics, and enthusiasts, creating a lively forum for cultural exchange and dialogue.
