The Corvinus University of Budapest is one of the most prestigious academic institutions in Hungary, specializing in the fields of economics, management, and social sciences. Founded in 1948 as the Faculty of Economics of the Royal Hungarian University of Sciences, it has undergone significant transformation over the decades, becoming an internationally renowned university. The university’s origins date back to the late 19th century, when the Oriental Commercial Academy was established to meet the growing need for qualified professionals in commerce and industry. In 1920, this institution evolved into the Faculty of Economics of the Royal Hungarian University of Sciences, which began offering high-level university education in economics and commerce. This transition was marked by a period of strong industrial growth and economic development in Hungary, which required a new type of specialized training. During the communist period, the university underwent further changes and established itself as a center of excellence for economic education. It was in 1953 that it took on the name of Karl Marx University of Economics, a title it held until 1990. With the fall of communism, the university renewed itself and in 2004 adopted the name of Corvinus University of Budapest, in honor of the Hungarian king Matthias Corvinus, known for his patronage of the arts and sciences. The main campus of the university is located in a historically significant building along the Danube, next to the Great Market Hall. This building, originally designed by architect Miklós Ybl as the Main Customs Office in 1874, is an exceptional example of neo-Renaissance style and is part of the UNESCO heritage. After suffering severe damage during World War II, the building was restored and became the main headquarters of Corvinus. Today, Corvinus University is internationally recognized for the quality of its education and research. It offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in English and Hungarian, covering disciplines such as business administration, economics, finance, international relations, sociology, and public policy. The university is accredited by prestigious international organizations such as AACSB, EQUIS, and AMBA, which attest to its high academic standards.
