The Hungarian Railway Museum, located in the Angyalföld district of Budapest, is one of the most fascinating attractions for enthusiasts of railway history and technology. Founded in 2000, the museum covers an area of 70,000 square meters and offers a vast collection of locomotives, carriages, and railway equipment that tell the story of over 150 years of Hungarian and international railway history.
The museum is housed in a former railway workshop built at the end of the 19th century, providing an authentic and charming setting for visitors. The main building and its annexes have been carefully restored to preserve the industrial atmosphere of the time, offering a picturesque backdrop for the extensive collection on display. One of the main attractions of the museum is the collection of steam locomotives, including some of the most important and iconic models in Hungarian railway history. Among these, the MAV 411 locomotive stands out, also known as “Gozdizel”, one of the first diesel-hydraulic locomotives built in Hungary. This machine represents a significant advancement in railway technology, marking the transition from steam to diesel locomotives. In addition to steam locomotives, the museum houses a variety of electric and diesel locomotives, as well as numerous passenger carriages and freight wagons. Each exhibit is accompanied by detailed explanations that illustrate its technical features, history, and use in the railway context. This attention to detail makes the visit not only interesting but also highly educational. Another fascinating aspect of the museum is the collection of miniature railway models. This section includes a wide range of detailed models representing different eras and technologies of railway history. The models are often accompanied by elaborate dioramas that recreate historical environments and railway landscapes, offering a detailed and engaging view of the miniature railway world. The history of railway transport in Hungary is closely linked to the country’s economic and social development. Railways have played a crucial role in modernizing Hungary, facilitating trade, mobility, and industrial development. The Hungarian Railway Museum celebrates this contribution, highlighting the importance of railways in building the modern nation. An interesting anecdote concerns the famous MAV 424 locomotive, one of the most powerful steam locomotives ever built in Hungary. During World War II, many of these locomotives were used to transport troops and supplies. One of these locomotives, now on display at the museum, survived numerous bombings and continues to function perfectly, representing a symbol of resilience and ingenuity.
