Strossmayer Park, locally known as Đardin, is one of the most important and beloved green areas in Split. Located north of Diocletian’s Palace, next to the Golden Gate, the park is a refuge of tranquility and beauty in the heart of the city. Named after Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer, the park was established in 1859 and has a long history of serving as a public space for the citizens of Split.
Strossmayer Park was created between two remaining bastions of the Venetian fortifications, the Cornaro Bastion to the west and the Contarini Bastion to the east. These bastions, built in the 17th century, add a historical touch to the park, integrating architecture and nature in a harmonious environment. During its creation, the park replaced an area previously used for military purposes, transforming it into a public garden that quickly became a landmark for the city.
A distinctive feature of the park is the central fountain, added in the mid-20th century. The fountain, adorned with a figure of a cherub (a small angel), has become one of the symbols of the park, offering a gathering and relaxation spot for visitors. A further restoration in 2002 modernized some parts of the park, adding a new modernist fountain on the western side and engraving the verses of the great Croatian poet Tin Ujević on the surrounding walls. These interventions have kept the park updated and relevant, without losing its historical charm.
The park also houses the famous statue of Gregory of Nin, an imposing monument to the medieval bishop who played a crucial role in the defense of the Croatian language. The statue, created by the renowned sculptor Ivan Meštrović, stands about 8.5 meters tall and is located at the north entrance of the park, near the Golden Gate. Legend has it that touching the statue’s toe brings good luck, a gesture that has made the statue a popular attraction for both tourists and locals.
In addition to being a place of natural and historical beauty, Strossmayer Park is also a vital cultural center. Adjacent to the park are important cultural institutions such as the Split Art Gallery, which houses a vast collection of Croatian art from the Middle Ages to the present day. The presence of the gallery enhances the park’s importance as a cultural hub, attracting visitors interested in art and history.
The park is also the site of events and cultural manifestations throughout the year. Fairs, markets, and festivals are regularly held in the park, contributing to a lively and engaging atmosphere. A notable example is the weekly flea market, where antique objects, local crafts, and historical curiosities can be found, making the park a place of discovery and commerce.
