The Franciscan Monastery of Dubrovnik, located in the heart of the Old Town, is a place of extraordinary historical and artistic charm. Founded in 1317, this monastic complex is known for hosting one of the oldest functioning pharmacies in Europe, and for its exceptional architecture that encompasses various styles, from Romanesque to Gothic to Renaissance. The history of the monastery began in the 13th century, when the Franciscan friars originally settled outside the city walls. However, threats of war with Venice and other powers led to the decision to transfer the monastery inside the walls of Dubrovnik in 1317. This move was not only a strategic measure, but also a commitment to protect the cultural and religious heritage of the Franciscans. One of the most fascinating elements of the monastery is its pharmacy, also founded in 1317. Located on the ground floor, the pharmacy served not only the friars but also the general public, becoming a source of income for the monastery. Today, this pharmacy continues to operate, representing a living bridge between the past and the present. The pharmacy houses a collection of historical objects, including recipe manuscripts, laboratory equipment, and ancient jars from Siena and Florence dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries. Architecturally, the monastery is a masterpiece that combines various styles. The structure includes two cloisters: the upper cloister in Renaissance style, with arches and semicircular vaults, and the lower cloister in Romanesque-Gothic style, with a series of double columns decorated with intricate capitals representing a variety of geometric, vegetal, animal, and human motifs. This tranquil space, surrounded by a garden, offers an oasis of peace in the heart of the city.
