The Athens Planetarium, officially known as the Digital Planetarium of the Eugenides Foundation, is one of the most advanced and fascinating facilities of its kind in the world. Located in the Palaio Faliro district, this planetarium offers visitors an unparalleled immersive experience in the field of astronomy and space sciences. Inaugurated in 1966, thanks to the vision of the Greek philanthropist Eugenios Eugenides, the planetarium was conceived as an educational center aimed at stimulating scientific curiosity among young Greeks. The original structure underwent a significant modernization in 2003, transforming it into a fourth-generation digital planetarium. This restyling included the installation of a 25-meter diameter dome, one of the largest in the world, and the adoption of cutting-edge technologies such as the IMAX and OMNIMAX projection system, capable of offering 360-degree projections on a surface of 935 square meters. The Athens Planetarium is renowned for the quality of its projections, which combine real images and digital animations to create an engaging and educational experience. Visitors can explore the solar system, travel through the Milky Way, and even witness the birth of the universe. These projections are not only visually spectacular, but also scientifically accurate, thanks to collaborations with research institutes and internationally renowned scientists. Politically, the planetarium has represented a symbol of progress and innovation for Greece. Its construction and subsequent modernizations have required significant public and private investments, reflecting the country’s emphasis on science and education. The institution has collaborated with numerous scientific and educational organizations to promote the dissemination of scientific knowledge and stimulate interest in the new generations. An interesting anecdote concerns the decision to create the planetarium. Eugenios Eugenides, the founder, was deeply convinced of the importance of scientific education. After consulting experts in astronomy and mathematics, he decided to invest in the construction of a cutting-edge planetarium that would inspire and educate generations of Greeks. This project has become a symbol of his vision and commitment to the promotion of science.
