The Skoufa Gallery, located in the Kolonaki district of Athens, is one of the most important contemporary art galleries in the city. Founded in 1981, the gallery quickly gained a prominent role in promoting and disseminating modern and contemporary Greek art. Its mission has always been to create intercultural dialogue through art, hosting both emerging and established Greek artists, as well as exhibitions of international artists. Since its opening, the Skoufa Gallery has paid particular attention to artists of the 1930s generation, a crucial period for Greek art that saw the emergence of significant figures. This focus has allowed the gallery to become a reference point for those wishing to explore and understand the developments of 20th-century Greek art. In 2000, the gallery expanded its spaces with the opening of an additional venue on the first floor of the main building, where fine art works are exhibited and thematic exhibitions are organized. One of the distinctive elements of the Skoufa Gallery is its ability to organize periodic exhibitions that reflect contemporary trends and themes. Among the past exhibitions are “Our Inner Child,” a collective exhibition exploring the theme of childhood and memory, and “The Pop Evolution,” which celebrated the influence of pop culture on contemporary art. The gallery has also hosted “Colour Fields,” an exhibition examining the use of color in modern art, and “Sea Through II” by Marina Vernicos, a photographic exploration of the Aegean Sea. The Skoufa Gallery is not limited to Athens; in 2014, it opened a second venue in Mykonos, one of Greece’s most iconic locations. This expansion has allowed the gallery to reach an even wider audience and present the works of its artists in a different and fascinating context. The Mykonos venue, located in the historic district of Kolonaki, offers a combination of curated periodic exhibitions and a permanent collection that includes paintings, sculptures, design, and new media forms. Featured artists include Stathis Alexopoulos, Elsa Kitsou, Melina Koan, and Dimitris Likissas. One of the most interesting anecdotes about the Skoufa Gallery is its exhibition dedicated to the “Evzones” on the anniversary of March 25, 1821. This exhibition, held at the Electra Art Space, was a visual and historical tribute to the Greek presidential guards, symbols of courage and tradition. Another notable exhibition was that of George Hadoulis, titled “New Landscapes,” which explored through painting the natural and urban landscapes of contemporary Greece. The exhibition program of the Skoufa Gallery is diverse and includes both solo and group exhibitions. These events not only highlight the talent of the artists but also stimulate reflection on social, cultural, and political themes. The exhibitions are accompanied by detailed catalogs and often by collateral events such as meetings with the artists, debates, and guided tours, enriching the visitors’ experience and promoting a deeper understanding of the works on display. The gallery is also known for its commitment to promoting young artists. By hosting works of emerging artists, the Skoufa Gallery provides a fundamental platform for launching new careers in the art world. This commitment is highlighted by exhibitions that showcase contemporary talents, creating a bridge between different generations of artists and the public.
