Porta Nuova is one of the most important monumental gates in Verona, located south of the historic center and represents a remarkable example of Renaissance military architecture. Built between 1532 and 1540 by architect Michele Sanmicheli, this gate was designed not only as a defensive work but also as a symbol of the power and greatness of the Most Serene Republic of Venice, which ruled Verona at that time. Sanmicheli, known for his ability to combine military functionality and Renaissance aesthetics, designed Porta Nuova with particular attention to architectural and defensive details. The gate is characterized by a massive structure with thick walls and sturdy pillars, capable of withstanding artillery recoil. Its design incorporates elements of Roman tradition, visible in the use of the Doric order and the rustic bossages covering the facade.
