The history of the Lakeside Gardens dates back to the first half of the 19th century. Before becoming the park we know today, this area was part of a larger complex of gardens and villas that faced the lake. In 1817, architect Giuseppe Sommaruga was commissioned to redesign the garden of Villa Olmo. This neoclassical villa is one of Como’s symbols and, thanks to Sommaruga’s work, influenced the design of the public gardens found in the surrounding area. In 1830, the municipality of Como decided to give a new face to these green spaces, making them accessible to all citizens. The Lakeside Gardens were officially inaugurated in 1862. The idea was to create a meeting and recreational place for citizens and tourists, where they could enjoy the natural beauty of the lake and the surrounding mountains. The choice to design the gardens in a romantic style was perfectly in line with the landscaping trends of the time, which favored outdoor spaces where nature could harmoniously integrate with artificial works. In the 1930s, an access path was added, and new trees and ornamental plants were planted. During World War II, the area suffered damage but was promptly restored in the 1950s. Since 2000, the Lakeside Gardens have been the subject of further redevelopment work, preserving their original charm and making them a major attraction for visitors. As soon as you find yourself at the entrance of the Lakeside Gardens, you will be welcomed by an atmosphere of calm and beauty. On your left, there is a large statue commemorating the famous writer Alessandro Manzoni, who hailed from this region. This monument highlights the connection between literature and the Como landscape. Continuing along the entrance avenue, you will find yourself immersed in an environment rich in century-old trees, including majestic plane trees and sequoias. From the terrace of the Lakeside Gardens, you will have a spectacular view of Como and the surrounding mountains.
