The Barcelona Aquarium, located at Moll d’Espanya in Port Vell, is one of the largest aquariums in Europe and an important reference point for Mediterranean marine science. Inaugurated in 1995, the aquarium stands out not only for its size, but also for the wide variety of marine species it houses, about 11,000 animals of 450 different species, distributed in 35 tanks. Among these, the highlight is the Oceanarium, a tank of over 4 million liters of water crossed by an 80-meter-long transparent tunnel that allows visitors to walk surrounded by sharks, rays, and other marine species.
The aquarium is divided into different thematic areas that recreate the various marine habitats of the Mediterranean and tropical waters. The section dedicated to the Mediterranean is the largest of its kind in the world and offers a glimpse of the local marine biodiversity, with tanks ranging from 6 to 120 cubic meters. Here you can admire typical species such as sea bream, moray eels, and sunfish. The tropical area, on the other hand, offers an explosion of colors and biodiversity with tanks dedicated to different environments such as the Australian coral reef, the Red Sea, and the Caribbean Sea. These tanks host spectacular species such as clownfish, corals, and venomous fish, offering a close look at tropical marine life. The Barcelona Aquarium was born as part of the redevelopment project of Port Vell, an area that has seen significant urban renewal since the 1980s and 1990s. This renewal has transformed the old port into a lively and modern area, rich in tourist attractions and cultural spaces.
