Basilica of the Star

The Basilica of Estrela, located in the neighborhood of the same name in Lisbon, is one of the most significant religious buildings in the city, a symbol of devotion and architectural grandeur. Its construction began in 1779 at the request of Queen Maria I, who wanted to honor a promise made to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in exchange for the birth of an heir. This basilica, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, was completed in 1790 and represents a fascinating combination of Baroque and Neoclassical styles. The imposing facade of the basilica is characterized by two twin bell towers and a large central dome, which dominate the surrounding urban landscape. This dome is visible from various parts of the city, offering a distinctive landmark. The statues of saints and allegorical figures that adorn the exterior add a touch of solemnity and magnificence to the building. Inside, the basilica is decorated with polychrome marbles of different shades, including gray, pink, and yellow, arranged in complex geometric patterns that create an extraordinary visual effect.The interior of the Basilica of Estrela is as impressive as the exterior. The main nave is flanked by altars decorated with golden statues and sparkling candelabras. The focal point of the interior is the dome, which rises majestically above the main altar, flooding the space below with golden light. Among the works of art in the basilica, the paintings of the renowned Italian artist Pompeo Batoni stand out, adding an additional element of beauty and spirituality.Another element of great interest inside the basilica is the permanent nativity scene, composed of over 500 figures carved in cork. This nativity scene, one of the largest in Portugal, attracts numerous visitors throughout the year, offering a detailed and fascinating representation of the Nativity. Additionally, the basilica houses the tomb of Queen Maria I, located in the right transept, which represents an important historical testimony.The location of the Basilica of Estrela is particularly suggestive, facing the Jardim da Estrela, one of the most pleasant parks in Lisbon. The project was initially supervised by Oliveira, but after his death in 1785, Santos took over the direction of the work, completing the project with great skill. The architectural influence of the Basilica of Estrela also extends to its connection with other historic buildings in Portugal, such as the Mafra Palace, built by Maria I’s father, and St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, from which it draws inspiration. These connections highlight the importance of the basilica as an expression of the power and faith of the Portuguese monarchy during the 18th century.
