The Miradouro de Santa Catarina, also known as “Adamastor” for the statue of the mythical giant overlooking the viewpoint, is one of the most famous panoramic points in Lisbon. Located in the Santa Catarina district, this viewpoint offers a spectacular view of the Tagus River, the 25 de Abril Bridge, and the Cristo Rei, becoming an ideal place to admire breathtaking sunsets and enjoy a vibrant and bohemian atmosphere. The history of Miradouro de Santa Catarina is rich and fascinating. The viewpoint takes its name from the nearby church of Santa Catarina, a baroque building that testifies to the religious and historical importance of the area. The terrace itself has been a privileged observation point since the 19th century, when it was built to offer citizens a view of the river and naval movements. One of the distinctive elements of Miradouro is the statue of Adamastor, a mythological character created by the poet Luís de Camões in his epic poem “Os Lusíadas”. Adamastor represents the forces of nature that Portuguese navigators had to face during their explorations. The statue, sculpted by Júlio Vaz Júnior in 1927, depicts the giant emerging from the rock, symbolizing the challenges and dangers overcome by navigators during the Age of Discoveries. Artistically, Miradouro de Santa Catarina is a place that inspires artists and photographers, thanks to its panoramic views and the special light of Lisbon. The atmosphere of the place is made even more suggestive by the presence of street musicians and artists performing, creating an environment of creativity and relaxation. The surrounding cafes and bars, such as Quiosque Adamastor, are perfect for enjoying a drink while admiring the landscape. An interesting anecdote concerns the recent nighttime closure of Miradouro. Since 2019, the viewpoint has been closed from 11:30 pm to 7:30 am for security reasons and to preserve the tranquility of the area. This measure has sparked various reactions among residents and regular visitors, but it has also helped maintain the site in good condition and reduce vandalism.
