The Miradouro das Portas do Sol is one of the most iconic places in Lisbon, famous for its breathtaking panoramic views of the Alfama district, one of the oldest and most picturesque in the city. Located near the São Jorge Castle, this viewpoint offers a unique perspective of the city, allowing you to admire a panorama that stretches from the terracotta roofs of Alfama to the Tagus River.
The history of Miradouro das Portas do Sol is closely linked to that of the Alfama district, the historic heart of Lisbon. Alfama, which takes its name from the Arabic “al-hamma”, meaning “baths” or “fountains”, is one of the few neighborhoods that survived the devastating 1755 earthquake, thus maintaining its intricate maze of narrow alleys and traditional houses. The Miradouro is located on what was once an ancient defensive bastion of the city, transformed over time into a place of contemplation and relaxation for citizens and visitors.
From a historical point of view, the viewpoint offers an open window to the history of Lisbon. From here you can see important monuments such as the National Pantheon, the Church of São Vicente de Fora, and the Monastery of São Vicente. These buildings not only tell the religious and political history of the city, but also bear witness to Portuguese architecture and art. An interesting anecdote concerns the statue of São Vicente, the patron saint of Lisbon, located at the Miradouro. São Vicente is depicted with a boat and two crows, symbols of the legend that tells how his body was transported by sea to Lisbon accompanied by two crows watching over his ship.
