The KattenKabinet, also known as The Cat Cabinet, is a unique museum located at 497 Herengracht, one of the most beautiful canals in Amsterdam. Founded in 1990 by Bob Meijer, the museum is entirely dedicated to cats, a tribute to his beloved red cat, John Pierpont Morgan, who lived with Meijer from 1966 to 1983. The idea of creating such a museum stems from the desire to celebrate the importance of cats in art and culture through the centuries. The museum is housed in a 17th-century patrician house, a historic building that alone is worth a visit. Built for the brothers William and Adriaen van Loon in 1667, the building has been inhabited by notable personalities, including the mayor of Amsterdam Jan Calkoen and, for a period, former President of the United States John Adams. The museum retains many of the original 19th-century furnishings, offering a fascinating context for the artworks on display. The KattenKabinet’s collection is extraordinary and includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, and other artworks depicting cats, created by world-renowned artists such as Pablo Picasso, Rembrandt, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and Sal Meijer. The variety of works on display provides a comprehensive overview of the role cats have played in art and culture, from ancient times to the present day. This makes the museum not only a must-visit for cat lovers but also for art enthusiasts. A particularly fascinating aspect of the KattenKabinet is the presence of live cats that roam freely through the museum’s rooms. These cats add a touch of authenticity and charm to the museum experience, allowing visitors to interact directly with the animals while admiring the artworks. However, visitors are encouraged to respect the animals’ space and not to disturb them unnecessarily. Located in a central position, the KattenKabinet is easily accessible on foot, by tram, or by bicycle. Its proximity to other tourist attractions, such as the Flower Market and the FOAM Photography Museum, makes the museum an ideal stop during a day of exploring the city.
