The DOX Centre for Contemporary Art, located in the vibrant Holešovice district in Prague, is one of the most innovative and dynamic spaces dedicated to contemporary art in Europe. Opened in 2008, the center was created through the transformation of an old factory, combining industrial architecture with modern and elegant design. This center not only exhibits contemporary art, but also serves as a platform for critical discussions, cultural and educational events, and interdisciplinary projects that embrace art, architecture, design, and new technologies. The vision behind DOX comes from the mind of its founder, Leoš Válka, who wanted to create a space that was not just a traditional museum, but a place for cultural exchange and interaction. Conceived as a response to the need for a broader contemporary dialogue, the center quickly gained a reputation for its provocative and stimulating exhibitions. Every year, DOX hosts a series of temporary exhibitions that explore social, political, and aesthetic themes, presenting works by Czech and international artists. One of the distinctive elements of DOX is the “Gulliver,” a blimp-shaped structure that rests on the roof of the center. Inaugurated in 2016, this futuristic space serves as a venue for cultural and literary events, offering a panoramic view of the city. The Gulliver is a symbol of DOX’s ambition to push the boundaries of art and culture, creating a bridge between the past and the future, between the local and the global.DOX exhibitions are known for their ability to address urgent contemporary issues. For example, the exhibition “Brave New World” explored the themes of surveillance and control in a technologically advanced society, while “The Art of Dissent” celebrated the role of art as a form of political and social resistance. These exhibitions not only showcase visual works, but often include interactive installations, performances, and workshops, inviting visitors to become active participants in the artistic experience. One of the most interesting anecdotes related to DOX concerns the work of Peter Sís, a renowned Czech-American illustrator and writer. In 2017, Sís created a series of tapestries in collaboration with Amnesty International and Atelier Pinton, honoring iconic figures such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Václav Havel. These tapestries, exhibited at DOX, are a perfect example of how art can serve as a tool to commemorate and promote human rights.Through collaborations with artists, intellectuals, and activists, the center seeks to address contemporary challenges and offer new perspectives on our society. This commitment is also reflected in the numerous conferences and debates that are regularly held, creating a space for open and inclusive dialogue.
