Kerið is a volcanic crater located in the southern region of Iceland, known for its spectacular elliptical shape and the turquoise lake that occupies the bottom of the crater. Dating back to about 3,000 years ago, Kerið is one of the youngest and best-preserved craters in the Grímsnes volcanic area, a region characterized by numerous volcanic formations. Kerið stands out for its reddish rock walls and vibrant contrast with the clear waters of the lake. This crater is of phreatomagmatic origin, which means it formed when ascending magma came into contact with water, causing an explosion. However, Kerið is unique for the presence of the lake, whose color is due to the presence of dissolved minerals and algae thriving in these calm waters. Geologically, Kerið is a perfect example of a volcanic caldera, with steep walls rising about 55 meters above the water level, and a diameter of about 170 meters. The bottom of the crater is occupied by a shallow lake, whose depth varies depending on seasonal precipitation, but generally ranges from 7-14 meters. The crater walls, composed of volcanic rock and scoria, offer an interesting variety of colors and stratifications, making it a fascinating place for geologists and tourists. An interesting anecdote involves the crater being used as a venue for musical performances. In 1987, the famous Icelandic singer Björk held an acoustic concert inside Kerið, taking advantage of the exceptional acoustics of the crater. This event solidified Kerið’s reputation as a unique venue for cultural events, combining natural beauty with performing arts. The presence of Kerið enriches the tourist experience in Iceland, offering an unforgettable stop for those traveling the Ring Road. The combination of accessibility, natural beauty, and historical-cultural significance makes Kerið a must-visit destination. Exploring this crater means immersing oneself in a landscape that tells millions of years of geological history, while also providing a refuge of tranquility and inspiration.
