The Matadero of Madrid, located on the banks of the Manzanares River, is one of the most dynamic and innovative cultural centers in Madrid. Originally built as a municipal slaughterhouse at the beginning of the 20th century, this complex of industrial buildings has been transformed into a vast cultural space dedicated to contemporary art, culture, and artistic creation. The history of the Matadero of Madrid begins in 1911, when architect Luis Bellido designed the complex as a slaughterhouse and livestock market to meet the growing needs of the city. Bellido’s project, characterized by neo-Mudéjar architecture, reflected the industrial aesthetic of the time, with the use of red bricks, iron, and decorative ceramics. For decades, the Matadero served its original function, becoming an essential part of Madrid’s daily life.In the 1990s, with the transfer of slaughtering activities to a new facility outside the city, the complex began to deteriorate. However, thanks to an innovative vision of the City of Madrid, the site was converted into a cultural center. After a phase of planning and restoration, the Matadero of Madrid reopened its doors in 2007, with the aim of becoming a cultural hub not only for the city, but also internationally.Today, the Matadero of Madrid covers an area of over 148,000 square meters, hosting numerous spaces dedicated to various forms of artistic expression. Among these, Nave 16 is one of the main exhibition spaces, used for temporary exhibitions of contemporary art. This building, with its large nave and industrial atmosphere, provides a unique context for experimental artworks and large-scale installations.The Cineteca is another highlight of the Matadero. This space is dedicated to cinema and audiovisual arts, with a particular focus on documentaries and independent productions. Equipped with state-of-the-art screening rooms and multifunctional spaces, the Cineteca is a meeting place for film lovers and creators, where festivals, film screenings, and author meetings take place.Another notable space is the Teatro Español Matadero, which offers a diverse program of theater performances, dance, and performances. Its mission is to promote contemporary creation and support new talents, offering artists a stage to experiment and innovate. The presence of the Teatro Español Matadero highlights the complex’s commitment to providing a platform for performing arts.On the other hand, the Casa del Lector is a space dedicated to reading and the promotion of literature. Through exhibitions, workshops, and educational activities, this center aims to encourage interest in reading across all age groups. The Casa del Lector also houses a vast library and co-working spaces for writers and scholars.
