The MeetFactory, located in the Smíchov district of Prague, is an international cultural and artistic center that embodies the dynamic and innovative spirit of the city’s contemporary art scene. Founded in 2001 by artist David Černý, musician David Koller, and director Alice Nellis, the MeetFactory was conceived as a meeting place for artists of different disciplines and a point of convergence for the public interested in contemporary art.
The headquarters of the MeetFactory is a former industrial warehouse located near the railway tracks, a symbol of its unconventional approach and its philosophy oriented towards experimentation. This building, with its raw and industrial aesthetic, has been transformed into a multifunctional space that houses artists’ studios, galleries, concert halls, and theaters, as well as residences for international artists. The choice of such a unique site reflects the MeetFactory’s commitment to breaking with traditions and creating a stimulating and inclusive environment for artistic production. One of the most fascinating aspects of the MeetFactory is its artist residency program. Every year, dozens of artists from around the world are invited to live and work in the facility, benefiting from a creative environment and cultural exchange. This program not only offers artists the opportunity to develop their projects, but also enriches Prague’s cultural scene with new perspectives and global influences. Resident artists often collaborate with the local community, realizing participatory projects and engaging the public in workshops and other activities. The programming of the MeetFactory is extremely diverse and includes exhibitions of contemporary art, experimental music concerts, theatrical performances, and film screenings. The exhibition galleries host shows by emerging and established artists, spanning different art forms, from paintings to multimedia installations. The performance spaces, on the other hand, host a wide range of events, from electronic music concerts to acoustic sets, innovative theatrical performances, and dance shows. An example of the MeetFactory’s eclectic programming is the “Festival 4+4 Days in Motion”, an annual event that combines theater, dance, visual art, and performance. This festival, known for its experimental and interdisciplinary nature, is a platform that allows artists to explore new languages and forms of expression, involving the public in immersive and often provocative artistic experiences. The MeetFactory also stands out for its ability to adapt and innovate. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the center developed new ways to engage the public, using digital platforms to broadcast live events, online workshops, and virtual tours of exhibitions. This flexible approach has allowed the MeetFactory to continue supporting artists and maintaining contact with its community, demonstrating a resilience and capacity for innovation that are at the heart of its mission.
