The Ivan Meštrović Gallery in Split is an extraordinary place that celebrates the life and works of one of the greatest Croatian sculptors of the 20th century. Located in an elegant villa on the Dalmatian coast, the gallery offers a comprehensive overview of Ivan Meštrović’s artistic career, showcasing a vast collection of sculptures, drawings, furniture, and architecture designed by the artist himself. Ivan Meštrović, born in 1883 in a small Croatian town, is considered one of the most important sculptors of his time, compared to geniuses like Rodin for his technical skill and expressive depth of his works. His artistic training began in Vienna, where he came into contact with the major artistic movements of the time, including symbolism and expressionism. These influences are reflected in his works, characterized by a strong emotional tension and great attention to detail.The Ivan Meštrović Gallery was inaugurated in 1952, in a building designed by Meštrović himself in the 1930s as his summer residence and studio. The villa, located on a hill overlooking the Adriatic Sea, is a masterpiece of modernist architecture, with clean lines, large windows, and open spaces that reflect Meštrović’s artistic philosophy. The building is surrounded by a park with numerous outdoor sculptures, creating a continuous dialogue between art and nature.Inside the gallery, visitors can admire some of Meštrović’s most famous works, including the monumental “Pietà,” a work representing the Virgin Mary holding the body of the dead Christ.
