Het Scheepvaartmuseum, also known as the National Maritime Museum of Amsterdam, is a leading institution dedicated to the rich maritime history of the Netherlands. Located in an impressive 17th-century building, once the arsenal of the Dutch navy, the museum offers visitors a journey through five centuries of exploration, trade, and maritime life.
The building that houses the museum, known as ‘s Lands Zeemagazijn, was designed by architect Daniël Stalpaert and completed in 1656. Originally used as a warehouse for the Amsterdam naval fleet, the site was transformed into a museum in 1973. After a significant renovation between 2007 and 2011, Het Scheepvaartmuseum reopened its doors with a new design and a renewed commitment to education and the preservation of maritime history. One of the main attractions of the museum is the replica of the Amsterdam, a ship of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Built between 1985 and 1990, this replica allows visitors to explore the ship and immerse themselves in 18th-century life on board. The museum also offers an extraordinary collection of ship models, maritime paintings, navigation instruments, and ancient maps, illustrating the craftsmanship and ingenuity of Dutch cartographers like Willem and Joan Blaeu. The permanent exhibition “Republic at Sea” tells the story of the rise, prosperity, and decline of the Netherlands as a maritime power. Through fifty key objects, this exhibition explores how trade, wars, and technological innovations shaped the nation. A significant part of the exhibition is dedicated to Admiral Michiel de Ruyter, a national hero known for his victories against the British navy in the 17th century.Another exhibition of great interest is “Maps & Marvels,” which presents an exceptional collection of maps, globes, and atlases. These objects not only show how the Dutch navigated and mapped the world but also offer a fascinating glimpse into the curiosities and treasures collected during exploration voyages. The museum’s inner courtyard, covered by a spectacular glass structure inspired by the wind rose, is a meeting and relaxation place for visitors. Here, there are also a restaurant and a bookstore, offering further opportunities for exploration and learning. The courtyard hosts special events and temporary exhibitions that further enrich the museum’s cultural offerings.
