The Railway Museum of Madrid, located in the former Delicias station, is one of the most fascinating cultural institutions in the Spanish capital. Founded in 1984, the museum houses one of the most complete collections of railway materials in Europe, offering a journey through the history of railways in Spain, from the era of the first steam locomotives to modern high-speed trains. The building itself, the Delicias station, inaugurated in 1880 by King Alfonso XII and Queen Maria Cristina, is a magnificent example of 19th-century iron architecture. The structure, with its large arches and imposing iron and glass roofs, represents a significant testimony of the industrialization and technological progress of the time. The museum’s exhibition path is divided into different thematic areas covering various historical periods and technological aspects of railway transport. The collection includes over thirty locomotives, including some of the first steam locomotives used in Spain, such as the famous “Locomotora 030-2148” better known as “La Bonita”, built in 1861. This locomotive, with its sturdy structure and elegant design, is a symbol of the early stages of Spanish railway industrialization.Another piece of great interest is the steam locomotive “Mikado”, one of the most powerful ever used by Spanish railways. Built in the 1950s, this locomotive represents the pinnacle of steam locomotive development before the advent of diesel and electric locomotives. The “Mikado” was mainly used for the transport of heavy goods, demonstrating the importance of railways in supporting the country’s industrial economy. In addition to locomotives, the museum exhibits a wide range of passenger carriages and freight wagons, offering a detailed look at the daily life of travelers and railway workers. Among the most fascinating carriages is the salon carriage used by the Spanish royal family in their official travels. This carriage, with its luxurious and decorated interiors, represents an example of the comfort and elegance reserved for illustrious travelers of the time.Another element that makes the Railway Museum a unique attraction is the Mercado de Motores, a monthly market held in the museum every second weekend of the month. This event attracts thousands of visitors who can explore the market of crafts, fashion, and gastronomy, all immersed in the historical atmosphere of the Delicias station. The market offers a unique opportunity to experience the museum in a lively and dynamic context, combining history, culture, and entertainment.
