The Rock Church of Madonna di Monteverde, located on the outskirts of Matera, represents one of the most fascinating and lesser-known examples of religious rock architecture in the region. The church dates back to the medieval period, between the 8th and 9th centuries, when monastic communities began to settle in the region, attracted by the tranquility and isolation offered by the rocky promontories. These frescoes, although partly deteriorated by time and humidity, still maintain a chromatic liveliness and expressive force that testify to the great skill of the local artists of the time. Among the most significant works, there is a representation of the Madonna with the Child, located in the main apse, which is particularly venerated by the faithful.The main altar, carved into the same rock that forms the structure of the church, is a masterpiece of simplicity and devotion. The side chapels house minor altars and other works of art of remarkable value, offering a glimpse into the spirituality and religious art of the Middle Ages. An interesting anecdote related to the church concerns an ancient legend that tells of a miraculous apparition of the Virgin Mary to a local shepherd. According to the story, the Madonna appeared to the shepherd to indicate the exact location to dig the church, promising protection and blessing for the community. This miraculous event strengthened popular devotion and helped to establish the church as an important pilgrimage site.
