Brouwerij ‘t IJ, located in Amsterdam, is an icon of the local and international brewing scene. Founded in 1985 by former musician Kaspar Peterson, this small craft brewery has transformed the way beer is conceived in the Dutch capital, becoming a symbol of the city’s brewing culture and tradition. The brewery is housed in a former brick public bathhouse, built in 1911, next to the characteristic De Gooyer windmill, the tallest wooden windmill in the Netherlands. The story of Brouwerij ‘t IJ begins with Peterson’s passion for Belgian beers, discovered during his musical tours. Dissatisfied with the beers produced by large Dutch companies, Peterson decided to start brewing his own beers, experimenting with recipes that combined tradition and innovation. The success was immediate, and the brewery quickly gained a solid reputation among locals and beer connoisseurs. The choice of the old public bathhouse as the brewery’s location was not accidental. The structure, with its water supply and drainage system, was perfect for the needs of beer production. Additionally, the location near the IJ river and the windmill added a touch of authenticity and historical charm to the project. The windmill, originally built in the 16th century and moved to its current location in 1814, has become a distinctive symbol of the brewery, also featured in its logo along with an ostrich.Brouwerij ‘t IJ produces a diverse range of beers, including twelve standard beers and three seasonal beers, as well as limited editions. Among the most popular beers are Zatte, a golden and fruity tripel, Natte, a brown/red dubbel, and IJwit, a fresh white beer. All these beers are certified organic, reflecting the brewery’s commitment to sustainability and quality. The decision to switch to organic ingredients in the early 2000s solidified the brewery’s reputation as a pioneer in the sustainable craft beer sector. In addition to production, Brouwerij ‘t IJ offers guided tours that allow visitors to explore the beer production process and taste the various beers produced on-site. The tours are available in both English and Dutch and take place every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday afternoon. The pub attached to the brewery, with its cozy indoor space and large outdoor terrace, is a popular gathering spot for residents and tourists, especially during the summer months. The brewery’s expansion did not stop at the historic site. In 2013, the need to increase production capacity led to the opening of a second production site at Zeeburgerpad, a short distance from the original location. Additionally, in 2019, Brouwerij ‘t IJ inaugurated a new taproom at Blauwe Theehuis in Vondelpark, one of Amsterdam’s most beloved parks, further expanding its presence and accessibility. The success of Brouwerij ‘t IJ goes beyond mere beer production. The brewery has played a crucial role in the revival of the craft beer culture in Amsterdam, positively influencing other small breweries and fostering greater appreciation for high-quality beers. Its philosophy, which combines tradition, innovation, and sustainability, continues to inspire new generations of brewers and beer enthusiasts.
