The Dylan Amsterdam, an elegant oasis of luxury located along the picturesque Keizersgracht, is one of the city’s most renowned boutique hotels. Its history is rich and fascinating, beginning in 1613 when Dr. Samuel Coster purchased a plot of land along the canal and built a wooden structure. A lover of literature, Coster founded the Duytsche Academie theater, which became a significant cultural center. In 1632, the architect Jacob van Campen, famous for his style inspired by classical Italian architecture, built a stone theater on the site, which became famous for its theatrical productions, including the opera “Gijsbrecht van Aemstel” by Joost van den Vondel, first performed in 1637.
The theater, unfortunately, was destroyed by a fire in 1772. The only remnants of the original theater are the entrance designed by Van Campen, which is now the main entrance of the hotel. In 1773, the site was purchased by the regents of the Catholic office for the poor and elderly, who maintained the property until 1998. In 1999, the building was transformed into a luxury hotel, retaining many of its historical details and integrating them with contemporary design. The 40 rooms and suites at The Dylan are all individually designed by Anouska Hempel, a renowned London designer. Each room combines elements of modern design with historical details, offering a unique experience that ranges from lofts with wooden beams to modern duplexes with minimalist furnishings. Some rooms overlook the tranquil 18th-century inner garden, while others offer panoramic views of the Keizersgracht, creating a perfect balance between history and modernity. The Dylan is not just a place to sleep but also a top culinary destination. The Vinkeles restaurant, awarded a Michelin star, is located in an old 18th-century bakery. The original ovens, discovered during the restoration work, are still visible and add a touch of historical authenticity to the elegant setting. The menu, curated by chefs Dennis Kuipers and Jurgen van der Zalm, combines classic French cuisine with contemporary touches, using fresh seasonal ingredients to create refined and innovative dishes. For those seeking a more informal atmosphere, the Bar Brasserie OCCO offers a cozy and chic environment, ideal for an informal meeting or an evening drink. The OCCO menu includes handcrafted cocktails and creative dishes that celebrate Dutch and local culinary influences. The intimate setting and attention to detail make every visit special, whether for breakfast, lunch, or an aperitif. The Dylan is also known for its exclusive and personalized services. Guests can enjoy a Les Clefs d’Or concierge, rent bicycles to explore the city, or even book a private boat tour along the canals. The inner courtyard offers an oasis of tranquility, perfect for relaxing after a day spent exploring Amsterdam. Additionally, the hotel has spaces for events and weddings, making it an ideal choice for intimate celebrations and special occasions. The central location of The Dylan, in the heart of the Nine Streets district, allows easy walking access to many of Amsterdam’s main attractions, including the Anne Frank House, the Van Gogh Museum, and the Rijksmuseum. This makes it a perfect base for exploring the city, combining the convenience of a prime location with the luxury and elegance of a first-class hotel.
