The Church of Santa Maria del Carmine alle Tre Cannelle, located in the Trevi district of Rome, is a fascinating example of Baroque architecture. Construction began in 1605 at the initiative of Cardinal Odoardo Farnese, protector of the Archconfraternity of Carmine. The church was consecrated in 1623, with a significant restoration in 1772 after a fire. The facade, designed by Angelo Specchi in 1750, is sober and elegant, with a single nave and a barrel vault.
One of the most remarkable elements of the church is a banner painted by Corrado Giaquinto, depicting the Madonna appearing to Elijah on one side and the Madonna giving the scapular to Saint Simon Stock on the other. The main altar houses an 18th-century copy of a statue of the Madonna of Mount Carmel and a painting of the Madonna of Carmine painted by Gaspare Celio.
A pipe organ, built by Aldobrando Fedeli in 1748, is located on the choir loft in the counter facade. This instrument is a significant testimony to the liturgical musical tradition of the time and is still used during celebrations.
In May 2022, the church and the surrounding building were entrusted to the Focolare Movement, transforming into a meeting and testimony center called Focolare Point. This decision recognizes the movement’s contribution to the life of the city and continues to enhance the spiritual and cultural heritage of the place. The importance of the church is also emphasized by literary and historical works that speak of it, such as those by Mariano Armellini and Claudio Rendina. The sobriety and elegance of the Baroque architecture of the church create an environment of great spirituality and contemplation, enriched by stucco decorations and works of art that invite prayer and meditation.
One of the most fascinating aspects of the church is its connection to the Archconfraternity of Carmine, one of the oldest and most important confraternities in Rome. Devotion to the Madonna of Carmine is evident in the numerous iconographic representations in the church, which testify to the faith and devotion of the faithful.
The church, dedicated to the Madonna of Carmine, houses images and statues of the Madonna of Carmine, a tangible sign of popular devotion. Every architectural and artistic element is studied to create a unique spiritual and aesthetic experience, which continues to inspire and move visitors of all ages.
