Church of Santa Teresa

The Church of Santa Teresa, located in Kowloon Tong, Hong Kong, is a magnificent example of religious architecture and social commitment dating back to the early 20th century. Founded in 1932, the church is dedicated to Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, known for her profound spirituality and her brief but intense life of devotion. The construction of the church was led by Father Giovanni Maria Spada, a missionary determined to create a place of worship that could serve the growing Catholic community in the area. The architectural project of the church was entrusted to Fr. Adalbert Gresnigt, a Dutch Benedictine artist and architect, known for his work on various religious buildings around the world. Gresnigt adopted a Romanesque style, characterized by rounded forms and simple lines, which give the church an atmosphere of solemnity and sincerity. This stylistic choice diverged from attempts at inculturation that proposed a more oriental design, instead preferring a Western aesthetic that resonated more with the parish’s Portuguese-origin faithful. The construction of the church took place during a period of great urban and social ferment in Hong Kong. In the 1930s, the city was experiencing rapid expansion and modernization under British colonial rule. Kowloon Tong, in particular, was a developing area destined to become an educational and religious center. The Church of Santa Teresa not only offered a place of worship but also became a community pillar, promoting educational and social values through its various initiatives. In 1952, the Santa Teresa Kindergarten and Primary School were built next to the church, emphasizing the church’s commitment to the education of the young. Fifteen years later, in 1967, the Caritas Center of Kowloon was inaugurated, offering a variety of social services to the local community. These developments were in line with the church’s mission to serve not only the spiritual needs but also the educational and social needs of the population. Additionally, the nearby Santa Teresa Hospital, managed by the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres, provided advanced medical care, further consolidating the church’s central role in community life. A fascinating aspect of the Church of Santa Teresa is its location within what has been termed the “Catholic cluster” of Kowloon Tong. This area included various religious, educational, and healthcare institutions managed by Italian, French, and American missionaries. Each institution reflected the national and cultural identities of its founders, creating a rich and varied urban landscape. The presence of these institutions not only contributed to the development of the area but also to the promotion of intercultural values and international cooperation. A distinctive element of the Church of Santa Teresa is the Madonna parade, an annual event that attracts numerous faithful and aims to spread the Christian message of love and hope. This tradition, along with other religious and social activities, underscores the importance of the church as a center of community and faith.
