Villa Lais, located in the Tuscolano district of Rome, is a significant example of a suburban residence dating back to the early 20th century. This historic park, covering approximately 28,000 square meters, is a green oasis that combines architectural and natural elements, offering visitors a peaceful place for relaxation and recreation. The history of Villa Lais begins in the 17th century, when the area was characterized by two vineyards called “alli Condotti” and “alla Ferriera”. These vineyards were located near the Felice aqueduct and the Marrana di Santa Maria, an ancient watercourse that promoted agricultural development in the area. In 1685, the property was purchased by Carlo and Lorenzo Merolli, two country merchants. The villa remained in the hands of the Merolli family until the first half of the 19th century. In 1839, the property consisted of three buildings arranged in a semicircle and connected to the Via Tuscolana by a long tree-lined avenue. However, it was only in 1906 that Villa Lais took on its current form when it was purchased by the Lais family. The family transformed the residence into a bourgeois villa, creating a garden with myrtle hedges and exotic plants, and building new structures such as a stable, a greenhouse, and a private chapel. The interiors of the villa were decorated with frescoes and other architectural elements reflecting various styles, from Art Nouveau floral motifs to marble fragments and medallions with portraits of illustrious men. Villa Lais is now a public park acquired by the Municipality of Rome in 1975. Recently, the villa underwent a complex restoration supervised by the Capitoline Superintendence for Cultural Heritage. This intervention included numerous tests to verify the stability and health of the trees, the improvement of the playground area, and the creation of spaces for fitness and picnics. The park also hosts an outdoor amphitheater for cultural events, making it a dynamic and lively place for residents and visitors. One of the most fascinating elements of Villa Lais is the small private chapel, now used for civil ceremonies. This chapel, with its frescoed walls and antique furniture, offers an intimate and evocative atmosphere for weddings and other celebrations. The chapel can accommodate up to 25 standing guests and is available for ceremonies throughout the year. The vegetation of Villa Lais is another of its distinctive features. The park is rich in ancient trees, well-maintained hedges, and flower beds, creating a pleasant and relaxing environment for visitors. The tree-lined avenues and paths offer ideal routes for walks, jogging, and other outdoor activities, making the park a perfect place to escape the urban chaos.
