Church of San Giovanni dei Genovesi

The Church of San Giovanni Battista dei Genovesi is one of the hidden gems of Rome, located in the picturesque Trastevere district. Built in the 15th century by the Genoese community of Rome, the church is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, the patron saint of Genoa. The facade of the church is simple yet elegant, with a Renaissance portal that introduces visitors to a solemn atmosphere. The interior of the church is characterized by a single nave, flanked by side chapels decorated with frescoes and valuable works of art. Of particular interest is the main altar, which houses a painting of Saint John the Baptist attributed to Giovanni Battista Gaulli, known as Baciccio. This painting, with its vibrant colors and dynamic composition, is an extraordinary example of Roman Baroque painting. An interesting anecdote concerns the Chapel of Our Lady of Mercy, located inside the church. This chapel was decorated with frescoes by Giovanni Andrea De Ferrari, depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary and the Genoese community in Rome.
