The Basilica of San Giovanni Battista dei Fiorentini, located at the end of Via Giulia, is one of the most important churches in Rome, built for the Florentine community of the city. The church was started in 1508 and completed only in the 18th century, involving some of the greatest architects of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, including Jacopo Sansovino, Giacomo della Porta, and Francesco Borromini. The facade of the church, designed by Alessandro Galilei and completed in 1734, is a magnificent example of Baroque architecture, with its Corinthian columns and statues of saints. The interior of the church is equally impressive, with a wide and bright central nave, flanked by richly decorated side chapels. Of particular interest is the funerary monument of Francesco Borromini, located inside the church. This monument, designed by Borromini himself, is an extraordinary example of his artistic mastery and a tribute to his importance as one of the greatest Baroque architects. An interesting anecdote concerns the church’s connection to the Medici family, who financed part of the church’s construction. This connection is evidenced by the presence of the Medici coat of arms on the facade of the church and by numerous works of art commissioned by the family.
