The Church of San Pietro in Montorio, located on the Janiculum Hill, is one of the most charming churches in Rome, famous especially for the Bramante’s Tempietto, considered one of the masterpieces of Italian Renaissance. The church was built in the 15th century commissioned by the Catholic Monarchs of Spain, Ferdinand and Isabella, and is dedicated to Saint Peter, as it is believed to have been built on the site of his martyrdom. The facade of the church is simple yet elegant, in Renaissance style, with a columned portico that introduces visitors to a solemn atmosphere. The interior features a single nave, flanked by side chapels decorated with frescoes and works of art. Of particular interest is the Bramante’s Tempietto, located in the cloister adjacent to the church. This tempietto, with its circular plan and perfect proportions, is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture and an extraordinary example of Donato Bramante’s artistic mastery.
